Hi Ali, I'll second Dave's recommendation. Many IxD's I know & love started their careers as technical writers. It *is* a role with creative potential, at least visually if not content-wise. Most especially, it offers the opportunity to analyze the form & behavior of systems and ensure that the communication of their functionality, at least, is as user-centered as possible. You might even find opportunities to conduct usability testing of communication materials, adding some of the same positives as in that alternate role of technical tester.
