You're right Alvin, my recommendation is specific to a certain context of use. I set up a filter to have IXDA messages bypass my inbox, and view them only via the label archive. So, they're already archived - marking as "Read" and "Unread" is the main way that I keep track of the crazy amount of messages.
Ignoring context is always a mistake! My apologies to the UX gods.
