My usage level may be skewed by the fact that I support a top-5 social network, but I find them immensely useful in a variety of ways.
- Within the workplace, my dept. uses an internal blog to share data, update each other daily on our initiatives, and synchronize our efforts. The company also has an intranet wiki that's highly useful, and uses sharepoint, though I personally use sharepoint less than the other two resources. - Not only are SNs such as IxDA and UXmatters good resources, but watching how a network manages information can provide inspiration for meeting a similar need in the workplace or with a client. (Sometimes you learn what not to do, too ;-) - Fellow sojourners on the UX path will refer to different sources, further expanding my personal database for my work. - While community consensus is not always right for a specific issue, when it differs from my work requirements/ needs, that strengthens my work. A difference going against my instincts or against a work requirement provokes a deeper exploration of an issue, and may inspire a better solution. - My role has me performing a lot of research and analysis, and exposure to many perspectives has given me more creativity in devising ways of measuring and quantifying UX-related variables. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
