Yes, that's funny. I've been an engineer and for many years (28+) I did see how we designed and developed UI's, some were pretty bad, and some pretty decent. Often we accused of putting everything and the kitchen sink in the UI, cause that's what we as engineers would want.

Then I started using the Mac UI's, reading books on usability and UI design, simplicity, etc. I started working with some folks who majored in HF and HCI. That was my start into this field. Now I try to take more of the user advocate role in any designs. Still am quite low on the learning curve, but progressing forward.

Yes, he seems to be thinking differently now ... in Cooper's keynote at Interaction08, he talks about engineers as fellow craftsmen.

Ben Galbraith has a good summary in his blog post:

It is a good book, although I think he goes a bit overboard
    against engineers IMHO.

He (Alan Cooper) talks about his IFE design in 'The Inmates are
Running the Asylum', so I recommend picking up that book and
        paging
        through that section.

You should have a look at Air New Zealand's in flight

            usable and
is a great example of IxD.
