Christine: I'm trying to read between the lines here... Your "design" problem: A) a reluctance to "maintain a current list of countries for the application"; B) a fear that countries will be missed (hence, the inclusion of the "other" free entry option; and C) an assumption that the data integrity of country names is not-so-crucial since it won't be otherwise used by the system (you say that Birth_Country is "stored" in the client record but not queried for reporting purposes... are these data otherwise *viewable* and by whom?).
