Chris,

Well first let's start by asking what do you think UX means, and I
will tell you that you are probably both wrong and right. It is an
extremely broad field which is about User eXperience. This includes
the entire experience a user has with any product, be it the physical
design or the interaction or the behavior, web presence, etc. As such
it has a need for a multitude of backgrounds. 
I have been a UXer for 19 years now. But i did not start out to be a
UX designer. started as Psychologist (Human Factors specialist), user
testing and things like that. research into cognitive ergonomic
issues. Later moved into interaction design, even before we know the
word existed :).
Now I am a creative director for user experience design.

So career wise seen a lot. Mail me for more questions.
