I also like the undo idea. Another suggestion could be a trash can icon for immediate deletion, and a "Delete?" button for the delete requiring confirmation.
I can't recall ever having to have confirmed a drag into a trash can or a click on a trash can, but the ? after Delete could indicate the questioning nature. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
