There are many examples where users can create a wish list without
signing up. Only when they want to access that wish list form another
computer, they will have to create a personal account.

e.g.: http://www.deverborgenstad.nl/kooktocht (in Dutch)
Hint: look for the button [Toevoegen aan Favorieten]

It's not necessary to prompt for saving data if someone is just
browsing to a different section or website. Give users a anonymous
account, and store the account id in a cookie.

Prompting when a user is about to close your webpage, is possible,
but not desirable. You would interrupt a user's action.
