I immediately think of "personal information management" (PIM). I'm
not knowledgable enough to give the list a synopsis, but here are a
couple of resources:
Good ol' Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_information_management
I also know about the Keeping Found Things Found website:
http://kftf.ischool.washington.edu/people.htm
This is run by the University of Washington's Information School.
Definitely a source of academic research. Unfortunately, I haven't
dug very deep into this site, but I imagine their research could be
very applicable to digital products and tools.

I want to come up with a better scheme for organizing files and

What I AM looking for are sources of rigorous academic research on
information organization and searching that I can use in developing a
solution.
