Hi Natasha, I'm presently enrolled in a Ph.D program at the Umeå Institute of Design with a focus on Interaction Design. The program is meant to be practice-based, with "real" design research projects in collaboration with companies and/or external collaborators.
There is also a young initiative (started in December 2007) here in Sweden called Center for Research in Design. It consists of a nationwide group of students and supervisors who are undertaking Ph.D studies in Design. We have discussed, explored and debated internally many issues about what can be referred to "practical research or practice-based Ph.D studies" Some basic about the group.
