The key is why are they sorting? If you mean the family members who
are entering the soldiers names, why would they need to sort? If so,
what fields? to what end?
If you mean people trying to find a listing on your site, rank could
be an optional field but it should not be required. Ranks change
quite often and the person looking could have no idea what rank they
are. The ranks should show up in the results field though. If you do
include ranks, that should not be a limiter on results.
When entering the details of the soldier you should have a field with
service before, and then the rank drop down should auto update with
the corresponding ranks for that service allowing only selection
within the particular service.
Just to note that the soldier's home state is a very popular search
term as usually thats what identifies them from the 5 others of the
same name in the DOD.
FYI, I am a Former Marine and have done hundreds of searches for
military buddies on different sites when I have lost touch with them.
Some good examples, Military.com's buddy finder and thefew.com.
I just did a search for a buddy on military.com, here are the
results.
Results 1 - 10 of 221 for "chris collins, Army"
Name Service Status Paygrade State Unit
collins, chris Army AL
With paygrade being the rank and State being the home state. The DOD
records are always remarkably bad, so I only know this isn't my
friend because he was not from Alabama.
Good luck.
