If you're doing exploratory or formative testing, where you're early
in a design and/or working with prototypes, the best value comes from
*not* being in a lab. Gather up your team and go to where the users are.
Value:
Testing in the field gets you additional (environmental,
contextual) data, and you can spend the money you would have spent on
rental fees doing more sessions.
Availability:
Only depends on the availability of the participant and the team.
And much more flexible than having to book a specific time in a lab.
Equipment:
You don't really need any, except whatever it is you're testing.
You do not have to record sessions. If you have people from the team
with you, all you need is their undivided attention.
Recommendation:
Doing usability testing in the field is fun, yields rich data, and
is much easier to pull together in many ways than testing in a lab.
