I think the biggest problem is size. People want phones on them at all
times, so they need to be pocketable. At that size you're not going to get
more than a 'thumb' keyboard, like the G1 or Blackberry. Such keyboards are
fine for the odd email or text, but they don't cut it when it comes to
serious typing tasks like writing articles, or coding.

Netbooks are great because they are extremely portable (although not
pocketable) and yet are big enough for many tasks, such as programming. In
fact, early netbooks were smaller (7/9 inch) and the market seems to have
stabilised at the slightly larger 10", since you get a nearly full-size
keyboard.

I don't see that total convergence is really possible due to the size issue.
