Hi all - What are your thoughts on maintaining a global navigation header (logo + primary nav bar + utility links + site search) across any and all pages / sub-sites of a site? For example, we've recently launched an online community, http://community.trendmicro.com/, on which we've placed our "global header" (all items listed above).
One of the reasons behind this practice is establishing the brand consistently across all of our pages/sites. As we develop new areas of our overarching site, I'm thinking that there are times - such as with the Community - that it seems improper or unnecessary. For example: blogs. I hate the idea of slapping this global navigation atop each of our blogs as the design of our global navigation is so large that it seems to dominate the page's design and focus. The solution I'm looking to propose is a smaller, modified version of the global navigation; a simple 'stripe' across the very top that takes up no more than maybe 40px, listing just the main categories seen in our global header (with no drop-downs), plus a much smaller logo. That's just one idea. I'm curious what all your thoughts are on forcing a global header on all pages / sub-sites simply for the 'purpose' of global consistency. I believe there are other elements of consistency that can be applied that allow for the purpose of the page to stand out... -Jennifer ________________________________________________________________ Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)!
