I've wondered this too. As far as I know it's just the first number (typically 3, 4, or 5) that indicates card type. All I can guess is it's an additional safeguard that the card is legitimate. I notice that I'm always asked this question when using my card over the phone - perhaps it's assumed that criminals don't know that cards beginning with 4 are always Visa?
