Screen reader users will eventually be able to hear updates like that,
when WIA ARIA is supported, but at the moment it is very patchy. Firefox
3.5 and a public domain reader called NVDA (for Windows) currently
provide the best support for new features like this. Ironically, what
are called 'live regions in ARIA (that can be updated asynchronously)
weren't supported by NVDA when I last tried. They worked in with the
JAWS screen reader, though.
