David: No flaming coming from here! I've done a fair bit of research on testing and standardized tests. They have little to no predictive validity, meaning your test score on a standardized test is not predictive in any way of your future performance in grad school. However, they are still required, probably because fMRI's are far too expensive as specialized intelligence tests and if nothing else, standardized tests do show motivation and determination.
Sourabh: I'm going through the same process right now. However, I am leaning more to the design side. I'm specifically looking for an Interaction Design program and I am currently studying for the GRE. The programs I have been looking into are: CMU - MDes IntD, IIT MDes and U of Washington, MFA IxD. I chose these as my main programs of interest because they have a more creative, design slant than HCI programs (I have been working as a usability analyst and realized this is not what I want to do as a career). Regardless of what you're looking at, try writing the GRE. It's available in almost every country and as long as you don't get a terrible mark, it really won't matter much if you have other strengths to your application (i.e. portfolio, GPA, etc.). Good Luck! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
