They could do it horizontally as shown here (on the Zappos site) -

One thing I don't like about this design, though, is that it tends to
capture the mouse since the filters appear across most of the page.
Using a mouse wheel to scroll the page, you suddenly come to a halt and
are scrolling one of the filters instead.
