It sounds like you're considering flyout navigation from a vertical
list, which can be difficult for users to select, since it's easy to
mouse off the active area. For that reason, I'd lean toward
collapsible navigation, also known as tree navigation. That's
assuming it suits your architecture.

James Kalbach has some good material on these issues in chapter 3 of
his book, "Designing Web Navigation."
