Over the past few years, we've had lots of discussions here on this list and in person, about "how does one become a good sysadmin?"

One recurring response has been (to paraphrase) "learn from other people". Every successful sysadmin I've met has had a story or two about some person who really influenced them in the field, or helped them learn something especially significant about technology, system administration, or professionalism.

I'm very happy to see the LOPSA mentoring program kick off, as informal mentorship seems to be a recurring theme in our community.

This seems to fly in the face of the stereotype of sysadmins as loners who wear black, hide in the server room and are in general not connected with other people. Actually, sysadmins are some of the most-connected people that I know!

So, who has been an influential person in your life? How did they influence you, what lesson did you learn from them that you've carried with you? Doesn't have to be about technology or our profession, but, please share.

If you don't want to name names, that's OK, but please do tell what you learned, or how this person influenced you in your life or profession.

Yours for a strong community,

Although I've never met him, I would say Luke Kanies (Author of Puppet) has influenced my SysAdmin mindset the most. Puppet is probably the first software I really felt strongly about, save Unix. Mostly through reading his blog, his ideas all seem to just make sense to me.

Another great community person who is doing some great stuff for infrastructure is RI Pienaar (Volcane on Freenode). Another person I've never met in person, but has great ideas which can easily be consumed via his blog. This day and age I think the best way to learn from people in good blogs, with RSS.
