When I worked at a computer store in my teens (remember when computers were
sold at stores?) the profit margin (before rent, commission, etc) was about
30-50% depending on the package.

I'm not defending Apple, just adding some data.

Note: PCs were sold at barely enough to cover commission. The
rationalization was that the store you buy a home computer from tends to be
where you come back to for software.
