Recently, on a mailing list I'm on (local to me), a friend posted the
following:

> Anyone on the list know of or is someone that can assist (and can
> bill) us here at work to restore DEC Unix from tape to a new drive?
> This is an DEC Alpha 1000 (one of a pair) that had the boot drive
> fail. The drive has been replaced along with a new back plane (don't
> ask!). We have a number of backup tapes but it has been too long for
> any of us here to remember the process.

I emailed him, and said if he hadn't found any help to let me know, and
I'd help cast his net more widely. Please email me privately if you can
assist with this, and I'll forward on the offer.
