I'll echo what Derek said. I search for a lot of technological stuff as part of the job, and the completion helps me to adjust my query to similar wordings of the thing that I'm working for. It's usually a good recommendation and improves my search efficiency.
And yes, when I'm searching for things to buy, even the ads on the right are occassionally helpful, especially for esoteric things like vibration mounts or a particular kind of mechanical apparatus. I do have occasional issues with my typing being too fast for the search box and auto-complete re-spelling what I'm typing incorrectly, but they seem to be getting better.
