Keep in mind that 800 service, while it is a distinct number, the 800 itself number is not generally terminated at your location. Instead, the number goes into a lookup data base and is translated on the fly to your "real" number. So you also need an ordinary PSTN (POTS or SIP) number. A good provider can change this translation easily and quickly so that should handle any downtime problems. International service requires a +800 number (not a +1 800) number. Again, it's just a translation. But unless your volume is very high, it's probably not cost effective. International callers can still reach your PSTN number directly (as can domestic callers). About 25 years ago, I signed up for 800 service from Sam's Club. It was provided through TTI National, which has been a subsidiary of various other companies through the years. The price depended on the distance but was generally about 1 or 2 cents per minute and no monthly charge. I still have the number. I know it costs them far more to send me a bill every month than the amount of the bill (this month was 30 cents) but, knock on wood, so far they haven't noticed or tried to fix the problem. -- Dave Close, Compata, Irvine CA "Politics is the business of getting [email protected], +1 714 434 7359 power and privilege without [email protected] possessing merit." - P.
