Huh. I've been doing this for a decade and somehow never tumbled on to telnet
performing /etc/service lookups. Makes perfect sense in retrospect, this is
just one of those things I somehow missed. Thanks-- and I'm glad I wasn't
interviewing with you at the time!
Though to be fair, explicit port declaration works just fine and dandy!
Funny, I'm the other way around.... Everyday I wished that browser developers
made services lookups (don't know how they'd do that on non-UNIX platform
though). "ipp for Internet Printing Protocol" is a lot easier to remember than
some random number! I have to grep ipp /etc/services every time I want to
connect to a cups server.
