Hi at,

So glad to hear there are people out there specifically training sysadmins like this. There are a few of us trying to build up a syllabus, hopefully going from Sysadmin 101 to beyond to help people both self-teach, and potentially provide some form of formal material to use for teaching people. We would love it if you were able to bring some of the wisdom from your experiences to the initiative. We're trying to feel our way through this to some extent, most of us only with the experience of having trained people on the job rather than anything more formal.

The main site is here: http://www.opsschool.org/en/latest/ and we have a github repository here: https://github.com/opsschool/curriculum/

This is my third year training sysadmins. I really enjoy it. I love the questions about how does it work and will this or that break it? My sysadmins sometimes find new and different ways to break a product. I enjoy the creative thinking.

The first major public course I taught was at USENIX ATC two years ago. I'll never forget it: after each break, there were less students in the class. 24 at start, 10 or 11 at end. I remember thinking, "Oh, no, it's melting!" Since then I've worked very hard to make my classes hands on and engaging. Here is some feedback I got recently:

Aleksey (trainer) was one of the best hands-on teachers
I've experienced in a long time. He is very knowledgeable
about the subject, patient and keeps the class focused. His
course materials including documentation, examples and
exercises were very comprehensive. I certainly could have
gained from his teachings and materials greatly at the onset
of my learning [software X] many months ago.

I know I am on the right track. I really enjoy this kind of work. Doing private trainings takes me to some unusual and beautiful places.

Thanks for letting me share that.

I really appreciate being part of this community, and being able to contribute to it.

Yours truly,
-at
