Even if you have the smartest, most paranoid users in the world, and
they avoid the sketchy parts of the net, they can still encounter some
malware.

Major web sites have served malware in the past via infected ads that
they displayed from well-known ad networks.

Anti-virus is a (mostly) solved problem and will for (almost) everyone
provide more value than risks.

Yes, there are corner cases.  You might even be one, but isn't it
better to close off this simple vector so that you can spend your time
working on dealing with higher level threats?

Run AV, be smart about needed exceptions, monitor closely.
