After reading my #lopsa log yesterday, I want to say a few words about why I am optimistic we /can/ make positive progress, and, indeed we /must/, as explained in recent sysadvent.
I got the Reading List (http://sabok.org/sabok.html) and the Professionalization Resource Directory (http://sabok.org/) up by compartmentalizing scope. The next chunk will be a Comprehensive List of Things a Sysadmin Should be Able to DO. Something along the lines of: “A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.” -- Robert A. Heinlein but for sysadmins. Stay tuned. If you know of such a list and it's not referenced on the SABOK site, please let me know. Best, Aleksey
