I've wondered about this lately as well... Without the bundled memberships from 
conference attendance, how many dues-paying members would remain?

I guess if LOPSA takes over the conferences, they could require membership as a 
requirement for attendance, and then have a conf reg option that includes 
membership. Members who paid for membership otherwise should get a discount (at 
least) equal to the membership fee. That way the bundled membership would be 
"above-board" and a choice people could make -
1) not a current LOPSA member, want to attend, so will pay for LOPSA membership 
as a part of registering for the conf
2) already a LOPSA member, want to attend, yay! I get a discount!
3) would attend, but don't want to join LOPSA, so won't be attending.

I really don't think a lot if people would choose #3 if they really wanted (& 
can afford) to attend.
