There are tons of electrical and mechanical factors here.  Honestly you may be 
fine, but you're taking your old broken laptop's life into your own hands, so 
continue at your own peril.

Heat dissipation, ducting (airflow), mechanical flexing, thermal and electrical 
conductivity of the material, proper grounding, static electric generation, are 
probably the most obvious things to think about.

Others have mentioned the dishwasher (I never heard of that before).  I have 
previously used the kitchen sink sprayer or shower head in the bathroom to 
clean gunked keyboards.  (Coffee gunked).  Best let it dry somewhere with a 
naturally constant warm air flow, like behind the server chassis in your 
network closet where there's a constant fan blowing some constantly dry 100 
degree air.  Leave it overnight.
