To be clear, what we refer to as a "self-signed cert" is a normal server cert, that happens to be self-signed (has no chain back to a root CA cert). A root CA cert identifies itself as being a CA, and is NOT used for encrypting communications, only used for signing other certs, which will themselves be used for communications. Although the CA cert is self-signed, we don't refer to it as a self-signed cert.
