Reviewing the linked minutes above I actually see our membership has
dropped by over 100 members and is down to 701 members. That tells me
we have a problem. I'm guessing a large part of this is due to
cancelling LOPSA-East this year which is one of LOPSA's largest
membership drives each year.
It's probably worth pointing out that one of the previously stated
"important" reasons for driving membership numbers has to do explicitly
with sponsorship. Most companies don't do sponsorships out of the
Milk-of-Kindness budget item, but because they get a chance to put their
brand/product up in front of people who can make a difference to their
bottom line.
A __tiny__ organization of C-suite people can probably get big $$
sponsorships for their events because they are budget drivers and
deciders. An organization like LOPSA, where the membership is almost
explicitly an in-the-trenches group, needs to have MORE members to
convince any given firm that the sponsorship investment stands a
reasonable chance of ROI. The "thousand member" number bandied about
from time to time is, I was told, the result of proposing to potential
sponsors who indicated that a thousand or more was their "magic" number.
I hope this (theoretically not mis-remembered) helps inform the discussion.
You seem like a nice enough guy and I applaud your interest in getting
further involved with LOPSA. Being a board member is a thankless job
and if you're going to be an effective board member it also consumes a
significant amount of your time. Good luck.
Yikes!
best,
Brian
