Many thanks for your kind reply, and thanks for pointing out that
mysql_native_password is NOT deprecated in mariadb.
We are running mariadb on the majority of our machines, and therefore I
(wrongly) assumed that the server in question was also running mariadb,
and hence I asked about deprecation here.
Anyway: the reply is appreciated, thank you!
