Hi All,

Start with the TLDR version:

* This is a good gain for our Debian/Ubuntu LTS user base to have 11.4 packages.
* The 11.4 codebase can already handle Debian 13 and Ubuntu 26.04
* There's no ongoing engineering effort that would be substantially different.
* There's a small amount of CI work to make this happen
* Any remaining substantial reasons why this shouldn't happen?

Long version:

At Guillaume suggestion (below), and is consistent with the State Of
MariaDB Survey 2026 (8.5.2 ) the number of LTS release is hard to
manage. With Debian 13 offering a single 11.8 release, our users are
forced into MariaDB upgrades when they do a distro upgrade.

The same thought process will also apply to Ubuntu 26.04, as a LTS
release that has MariaDB 11.8 packaged for it.

I think offering MariaDB 11.4 for both Debian 13 and Ubuntu 26.04 can
be accommodated. The Debian 13[2] EOL is ~2028-08-09 and with LTS[3]
becomes 2030-06-30. The EOL for 10.6 MariaDB Server(Community)[1]
2020-05-29 giving users a stable 11.4 base for a few years. Ubuntu's
26.04 EOL is 2031-07-01.

Given the request was around LTS Distros, the same argument of
supporting earlier versions applies to SUSE and OpenSUSE. But since
no-one's asked, and resources are limited, I'm happy to limit to the
Debian/Ubuntu for now.

I checked with Razvan and our CI infrastructure can handle the one
more LTS version release for these two distros. Its mainly these build
resources that limit the willingness to accommodate 10.11 as well.

Engineering considerations:
* I"ve tested the 11.4 codebase and it builds ok on Debian 13 and Ubuntu 26.04
* debian/autobake-deb.sh is consistent between 11.4 and 11.8 WRT these
two distros
* Ongoing maintenance: Debian 13 has similar tool versioning to RHEL
10 (gcc 15.2.0 vs 14.3.1) which is maintained for MariaDB 10.11, so
we aren't accommodating any major differences in compiler versioning,
and not extending the 11.4 lifecycle.
* Current Debian packaging has mechanisms to prevent downgrades of a
distro 11.8 version back to a MariaDB provided 11.4, so we're not
corrupting user data.
* Technically a 11.8 to 11.4 downgrade can be done[5], however
additional packaging work is required to support this, if there's a
demand, and I haven't seen a request.
* Buildbot CI will need small changes to start building these packages
* Buildbot will need some upgrade/downgrade script enhancements to
hand ths additional type of testing. (community assistance most
welcome to achieve this[6]).

Hi Faustin,

Debian 12 is not the current Debian release. Therefore if you install
Debian 13, which is the current Debian release, the minimal option is
11.8.
11.4 and 10.11 should also be available for Debian 13.
