Cameron, OSGeo sponsorship does give the right to use the OSGeo Sponsor logo on organizational web sites, and other materials. http://www.osgeo.org/sponsorship More generally, OSGeo sponsorship is "sold" in substantial part as a promotional thing. The assumption that organizations sponsoring OSGeo should get some recognition and marketting benefit from their support for such an important and worthwhile organization. The other aspect is that organizations dependent on the FOSS4G ecosystem are helping themselves by keeping the general ecosystem healthy and growing which can be accomplished through OSGeo. But this is, at least, a harder point to convey effectively.
