Huh? Why doesn't it impress you? It's the closest thing to a standard that exists. Some support for SLD exists in: * MapServer * GeoServer * OpenLayers (and things which build on top of it) (I'm sure others can add to this list.) It is seperated from data (unlike mapfiles or mxd files). It does a single job and (regardless of whether I think it does it well) at least attempts to solve the problem in a generic way. The OpenLayers Style/Rule/Filter framework is based on the same principles as SLD, and in my experience, that is working well: http://crschmidt.net/mapping/choropleth-canvas.html can be directly mapped into SLD, so far as I can tell. So, I'd like to understand: What's wrong with SLD?
