As I am a big fan of jQuery, and use it for everything (including making and serving breakfast), I say, what an excellent idea this is. Now, there is a project called jMaps (see http://github.com/digitalspaghetti/jmaps/) which may have some work already done... at least in concept. It wraps jQuery around Gmaps API.
