Good points Maria. GeoForAll is a global inclusive community and we are all
working for Open Principles in Science and Education. Our colleagues are
members of AGILE, UCGIS, ISPRS, ICA, IGU, AGS, AAG, EGU, various national and
regional associations etc etc and they are our Ambassodors for Open Principles
in these networks. Over the last few years, we have build up a huge global
network of influential ambassadors for Open Principles in Science and Education
who are all in key positions in various international and national levels
globally. We are working closely with the wider open education , open science
communities so that science and education is always a public good forever .
Science is for everyone and geospatial science should not be "owned" by any
vendor owners!

UN GGIM Academic Network is great synergies for us and we aim to use this
platform to provide another opportunity to expand impact for Open Principles in
GeoEducation in as many dimensions as possible.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Dear Peter
You have touched the important point. GeoForAll is a Community, like OSGeo is.
UN-GGIM is an Institutional Network. They are different and complementary.
I know that it is not easy for many colleagues to join this institutional
network. But some of us are also there and we can convey the initiative of
GeoForAll there.
We were just discussing few days ago about sustainability and open source.
Well, if there is an initiative of GeoForAll related to this theme, I and our
Universities that are formally joining UN-GGIM AN, can present it within
UN-GGIM AN and this gives the initiative more visibility.
And this is just an example.
Best regards.
Maria

This is great news - Congratulations and well done Maria on the development of
the UN-GGIM Academic Network.

Just to echo what Jody said about GeoForAll - I would be very interested to
hear your opinion, and Suchith's opinion, on where GeoForAll stands now that
this more formalised and high level academic network has been established?

I feel that in many cases, for Universities and Research Centers, it might be
very difficult to have an application signed by the top level of the
University. I know in my case it would be very difficult.

GeoForAll offers the very inclusive, bottom up, grass-roots, type of
educational network where a single, small, dedicated and motivated lab within a
complex system like a University can join (based on agreeing to the GeoForAll
MOU) and working with open principles for open education and learning.

Did you look at the website of UN-GGIM? It is a forum of representatives of the
Members States or, in case of the Academic Network, of representatives of
Universities and Research Centers.
It is another level (instututional) with respect to GeoForAll.
The Universities involved in GeoForAll can apply for becoming member of this
network. The application must be signed by the top level of the University (for
instance, in my case, as in many others, the Rector) and obviously the
University has to be involved in projects which support SDGs and the UN-GGIM
mission.
If it is not clear the difference please ask me again.
Best
Maria

Can they consider joining GeoForAll, or is there a reason a new network is
being setup...

Dear All
As probably some of you already know, recently was created, under UN-GGIM, the
Academic Network.
Here you can see all details
http://unggim.academicnetwork.org
In my opinion it is relevant that all universities and research centers
contributing to the UN mandate and the SDGs are part of this network.
Please consider, if you have activities in this field, to join the network
(procedures are described on the website) and to help me with comments and
suggestions.
The next meeting of the UN-GGIM Academic Network will be in New York (at UN). I
will attend and therefore I can present our join activities and I can report
you later the outcomes.
Best regards
Maria
