I appreciate the renewed interest in our VM server / service
(http://skullspace.ca/wiki/index.php/Vmsrv).

One resource I've held off on requesting is a public ip address for the host system itself.

Just to be clear, guests VMs have always had the ability to have a virtual ethernet adapter on the public IP switch and assign themselves a public IP, so this is for host system itself getting a public address.

So far, various remote access needs could be satisfied by doing port forwarding from the Skullspace LAN router.

A public IP would make this a little more manageable over time and leave the Skullspace router open for port forwarding to things that aren't on the vm server.

I imagine that many future VM users will be primarily running a web server. One use I have in mind for a host system public IP is to run a reverse http proxy (such as apache2 mod-proxy) which could forward traffic for different websites hosted by different VM guests who will each have different private ip addresses on the LAN. (useful only for VM guests who need a public IP for port 80 and 443, not helpful if they need a public ip for other reasons)

(I suppose I could pull off the same trick by forwarding port 80 and 443 on the Skullspace router to this proxy server; but it would be nice to not require that extra dependency and leave those router ports open for other projects to forward from the router)

This reverse proxy feature will actually be a selling point for encouraging future vm server users (who only need a public ip for web) -- if someone wants to run websites on a dedicated server they have to claw and fight to steal one of the reserved 12 public ip addresses away from someone. Go with a VM and this proposed reverse proxy of port 80 and 443 is made available to you, no fighting requiring to enjoy public access. (but, let me say it again you can still directly use a public IP on your VM if you want)

Now I must do my own clawing and fighting.

The following 5 public ip addresses are not reachable with ping or nmap -PN and are presumed to not be in use at all for that reason:

206.220.196.54 Andrew's Mystery Machine
206.220.196.57 Jackal's VM server (196.56 has the same name but is reachable with nmap -NP)
206.220.196.58 Stefan's Server
206.220.196.59 Alex's server in the rack
206.220.196.60 Colin's project server

I hope someone on this hit list will consider releasing their hold on this precious resource prior to Tuesday 6pm so as to avoid me demanding that the membership vote or conduct a random draw someone off the ipland. I could also just take the law into my own hands...
