I'm +1 for low standards, I haven't been offended by the place yet. I can live with us hitting rock bottom first (we're not there yet) and seeing what we want to do once we're there.

As for "paying" people to do presentations...

No, not only or mostly presentations -- as those indeed take a lot of work which indeed won't motivate most folks to do it for a measly $20.

My idea is that all someone has to do to earn their $20 (or whatever larger spread) is co-organize (share the labour with friends) some kind of activity on a monthly basis or equivilent [bi-weekly for 24 weeks, etc] -- its good enough if all they do is post it on the calendar, announce it when it starts the first week or month, and show up with a brain full of pre-existing knowledge -- e.g. electronics night, game mod night, networking night, Windows security night, etc.

No prep, no materials, just announce and show up and be happy if such minimal organizing is of interest to two or three other people for 30 minutes. 43 people doing a small, fun effort like could make a huge difference in perceptions of the space being active and worth paying to be in.

It's all about leveraging the most effect from the least amount of effort.

Here, in another sense I mean to be +1 for low standards.
