Just want to let everyone (especially today's cleaning crew) know I have plan for all the computers that were brought in for give away last Saturday.

I'm going to churn out hard drives in a ready to go state this week.

Once I get a pile going, I'll put out an announcement and invite members go ahead and combine ready to go drives and machines at their leisure.

Next Saturday (Nov 3) we'll have a final build-athon.

Saturday after that (Nov 10) I will manage a final give-away process at the space for much of the day with a post to the Winnipeg Free Cycle mailing list
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WpgFreecycle/
As such, it will need to be advertised as "free computer" and not "pay what you can". I will also comply with Freecycle's rules by not posting Skullspace's address on their list and will respond to individual respondents off list with specific reservation commitments for that day.

Any machines with a label on them in the corner of the classroom are ready to go and unreserved -- feel free to directly give them away to people you know along with CRT monitors, keyboards, mice, and power cables from the back elevator area.

I will take reservations between now and Nov 10 for anyone else -- so more worthy causes/individuals than Winnipeg Freecycle have first dibs on this if people get them in touch with me. Have them use the [email protected] address to make this easier for me to manage.

I should also comment on the computers that ended up at the table of doom. Several of them had their hard drives removed by the donor by disconnecting the heat sinks from the CPUs instead of properly removing the hard drive chasis from the case. (required removing front of case).

As a result, there is insufficient contact between these heat sinks and the notorius Pentium IV CPUs -- they require a re-do of thermal material. We dealt with some serious instability on these at the hackathon last weekend due to this.

There were also machines that came in with their hard drive chassis removed, and there is no way to put a new hard drive in them without such a thing short of duck tape.

If somebody wants to put in the time to re-do the thermal material, than these machines can be moved back to the back elevator room and I will see to it that they're given away with the rest. Ditto for machined junked due to hard drive chassis, if the originals show up or someone goes out and buys/donates 5 1/4 " to 3 1/2" brackets, then I'll make sure they find a good home. Thermal grease, brackets, and travel costs can be re-imbursed out of the $25 we earned with the "pay what you can" approach last Saturday. (was deposited in donation box)

Mark

And FYI, we are not accepting any more computers for give away, I'm getting rid of what came in, not soliciting any more to come our way
