December hackathon is happening no matter what. Might as well call it the opening (minus the grand) if nothing else is happening, what's the harm?

Are there a bunch of people who just don't have the energy or time to contribute to an opening occasion until much later? Are we stealing their thunder by attaching the word "opening" to an earlier occasion?

Perhaps we can just nickname the December hackathon:
Skullspace hackathon 2.0.1, "come on down and hack, but don't expect us to welcome you at the door like its some kind of special opening"-hackathon ;)
