The sad thing is most cameras are really stretching the limits of what they say they can do, so you can usually reduce the size to 50% (or 75% for good cameras) without noticing any degradation.

It's all multiple needless megabytes for the sake of a sales pitch.

Images are fine, it's just that the server has to send them to each
person in turn, which generated ~400 MB of traffic. This lagged the
email server, the mailing list server, and our IRC server. Probably
