Ha, wow, is it already 11:50? I guess I won’t be there. Got some dishes washed,
though.

Subject: [SkullSpace-Discuss] Movie Night tonight!

It's been a few weeks (months?) so let's have another movie night tonight!

I've got some things to do at the space first, but I was hoping to screen The
Phantom of Liberty[1] later in the evening. This is the penultimate film made
by Luis Buñuel[2] in 1974, who also made Un chien andalou (An Andalusian
Dog)[3] with Salvador Dalí (maybe some people know this film).

The Phantom of Liberty follows in a similar surrealist vein with Buñuel's other
films but in my opinion is easier to follow and understand the imagery and
symbolism. (For the weirder and much harder-to-understand film by Buñuel, check
out L'age d'or (The Golden Age)[4] which is just... very random...). A brief
description from Wikipedia:

"The Phantom of Liberty is a film that celebrates the notion of chance
encounters... The overall structure of the film is one of seemingly unconnected
episodes linked together by random encounters. The story is passed from one
scene to the next as if the narrative is a relay race: the narrative ‘baton’ is
passed on by means of a minor character from one scene becoming the next major
character."

I find a lot of the scenes very funny and playful; for instance in one scene a
man whom we take to be a pervert gives some children some photos in a park.
When they take them home to their parents and show them, the parents are
shocked at the "disgusting" photos - which are revealed to the viewer to be
nothing more than photos of French architecture.

As mentioned, I'll be playing this later in the evening so as not to disturb
any other activities going on. Hope to see you tonight!
