I have two non-rack-mount APC SU1500s that I'm not using. I believe the batteries are now inert masses, and I'm not 100% confident of the electronics, but you should be able to rig a quick test with any cheapo 12V SLA cell to check the electronics are OK. Batteries are (IIRC) about $70-80 for off-brand (ups4less.ca?).
FWIW, I think they (ups4less) have a UPS trade-in program; send in a bunch of old, semi-dead units, get one working (refurb) unit back.
