+1 for the Java / Android class.... This has been lingering on my to-do list
for a while.

Hey everyone,

Skullspace has an awesome classroom. Let's use it.

Starting in late January, my partner Sara Arenson
<sara_aren...@yahoo.ca<mailto:sara_aren...@yahoo.ca>> is going to offer a six
week (one evening a week) course in computer fundamentals or software
development. Day of the week to be decided.

Your feedback will help us choose the specific topic for the course. Tell us
what you would like to be taught and are willing to pay $60 ($10 a night) for.

Because you're paying, Sara is going to deliver a quality course for this. Each
night will feature a prepared lecture and on site hands on lab component. And
there will be three take home assignments (one every other week) with
individual feedback.

And, Skullspace will get a bit of classroom rent as well, so you'll also be
supporting the space. Skullspace membership not required to attend.
(I'll be there for doors and will use the opportunity to pitch Skullspace
membership to non-members)

Some computer fundamental course topics she has in mind are:
 * Intro to (taste of) programming
 * Intro to the web through HTML and CSS
 * Information encoding (number systems, text encodings, machine code
encodings, colour and image encoding, and other data formats)

Some more specific development related courses for folks who already have some
basic background like one of the above could include:
 * In depth CSS
 * Ruby on Rails
 * JavaScript
 * Java
 * C
 * Assembler (ARM?)

Don't be shy, feel free to propose something else along these lines. Sara is
willing to learn and tackle a new topic for teaching if there's demand. Just
don't ask for something too hardwarish like Cisco, system administration,
computer technician, electronic repair or design, killer robots from Venus*,
software radio, computer aided design etc...

We'll put a call out for registration when we have your feedback on topics and
day of the week.

Sara's teaching background includes having been a computer science and math
teaching assistant, and a sessional lecturer in computer usage, intro computer
science and assembler programming.

She worked for a Microsoft sub-contractor in Seattle implementing a libc core
in assembler on a new platform and also testing Microsoft TV (dot-com boom
days). Here in town she worked more recently for awhile with a company that
uses Ruby on Rails and managed to convince them to hire her even though they
knew she only had on week's experience with Ruby and Rails.

Sara has both a Bachelor of Computer Science Honour (U of M) and a Bachelor of
Arts in Theatre (U of W).

So, when she's not working on this course she'll be working on polishing the
script of her monologue /Teen Trucker/ appearing at:

I am willing to throw in my own a capella rendition of this if it helps...
