I guess for 'business customers' they prefer not to just leave the meter
reading card in our mailbox that we can phone in?

At home I phone my readings in each month so that they get estimated as
seldom as possible - is that an option for the nature of our service
package with them? E.g at the first or last Tuesday meeting of each month.
