Assuming Centos is still keeping close redhat ties, are you not seeing a log at
/tmp/slimserver.log?

you can try this based on an rpm install:

rm /usr/local/slimserver/Cache/.slimserversql.db ( I think this is the default.
I've run from svn for so long I no longer recall if this is a setting or an rpm
default)

/usr/local/slimserver.pl --d_info --d_scan --d_sql

you will then be bombarded with messages as the scan starts, and should at least
be able to see the last song being read when/if the scan crashes.
