Hi Roy,
the other place to look for information on installing
Slimserver on Gentoo is
http://www.revogear.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=360

There is an ebuild for slimserver 5.4.0 available and
I put together my notes on how I used this to install
on my KuroBox. (128mb, 266mHz PPC - a 'super'
linkstation, or a Linkstation Plus). I've ~8k songs
and see similar CPU usage as Marc.

The system works very well with very few dropouts, I
only hear dropouts when I am running the internet
radio streams, which I think has more to do with my
ISP than slimserver.

I will be reading Marc's article to see how to upgrade
my system to 5.4.1, or even 6.02a.

The revogear forums and the yahoo group
(http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LinkStation_General/)
for the linkstation are pretty good for additional
information.

Good luck, it is well worth the effort.
Pete

FANTASTIC! (all caps isn't loud enough)

Thanks Marc. As a Linux Newbie (not a Coward) I've
just installed
Gentoo on my laptop and was wondering what I needed to
do to get
SlimServer running *properly*. Now I feel confident
enough to blow
away windows on my server PC (dual 1Ghz Pentium III,
SCS 160, 512 MB
<hdwe interleaved> RAM). I have a good command line
background (Open
VMS, DOS, some *nix), now that I know what needs doing
I can do it.
Maybe I'll even write a How To for Gentoo as I go.
Thanks for the effort and the documentation.
