I've got several pairs of self powered speakers that auto
detect and turn on and off in response to a signal. I use a
set of "AR Powered Partners" in my library with a
Squeezebox for exactly this reason, they are on top of
bookcases way out of reach. The PP are old, I got them at
least 14 years ago, you probably can find them on ebay.
They are very nice sounding, heavy, each is a triangle
about cut from a 10x10 square about four inches thick.

That's very helpful, thanks. It lead be (indirectly) to the
Advent AV570 (which you can find at J&R on Amazon), which
has good reviews and also features auto-on. There's some
evidence that these speakers are in some way related to the
old Audio Research line, but it's a little hard to follow.

Anyone using a Henry Kloss Tivoli Radio 2? This seems like a nice unit - looks like it requires an rca to phono plug adaptor, but should work. My wife listens to NPR (KCRW in fact) most of the time on the radio, but would like access to the server's music collection. I think this radio would be the best of both worlds paired with a Squeezebox.
